1. Who we are
CalCal is a calorie-calendar and food-awareness application operated by its developer (“CalCal,” “we,” “us”). Questions about this policy can be sent to support@getcalcal.app.
2. Information we collect
Account information
We process your email address, display name, authentication provider identifiers, session information, and account settings. The current app creates a device-linked guest account. Where Google sign-in is available, Google may provide your name, verified email address, and a provider-specific identifier.
Food and nutrition information
We process meal descriptions, meal photos you choose to analyze, estimated calories and macros, targets, saved meals, calendar history, and related timestamps. Original meal photos are sent for analysis and are not intentionally stored in your CalCal meal history after the analysis completes.
Personalization and conversations
If you choose to provide them, we store sex, height, weight, body-fat percentage, occupation, work activity, meal frequency, gym frequency, experience with macros, and free-text routine notes. We also store your AI messages, responses, meal-photo analysis results and conversation summaries. Relevant profile details, food history, targets and conversation context are used to personalize AI responses.
Social information
If you opt in to Social, we process your chosen username, friend requests, friendships, blocks, abuse reports, and daily calorie and macro totals. Accepted friends can see only daily totals, targets, and whether a day was observed. They cannot see meal text, individual foods, or photos.
Subscription and usage information
We process subscription status, App Store transaction identifiers, analysis counts, search-query counts, and technical AI token usage to enforce limits, prevent abuse, and operate the service.
3. How we use information
- Provide accounts, meal analysis, calendars, targets, saved meals, and optional social features.
- Estimate nutritional content using AI and, when needed, grounded search.
- Maintain subscriptions and daily usage limits.
- Secure, debug, and improve the reliability of CalCal.
- Respond to support requests and comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use meal history for third-party advertising.
4. AI processing and accuracy
Before AI processing, CalCal asks for your explicit permission to send messages, selected meal photos, relevant food history, targets, conversation context and optional personalization to Google Cloud / Vertex AI. This processing produces nutritional estimates, answers and background conversation summaries. Your permission is recorded for your account, and you can withdraw it in Account → Privacy. Withdrawal stops new AI requests and background summaries; processing already started cannot be recalled. Some uncertain or product-specific requests may use grounded web search. AI results can be incomplete or wrong and should not be treated as medical advice.
5. Service providers
We use service providers to operate CalCal, including Google Cloud and Vertex AI for hosting and analysis, MongoDB Atlas for database hosting, Apple for App Store subscriptions, and Google for optional Google Sign-In. These providers process information under their own terms and our service arrangements.
6. Retention
We retain account and meal information while your account is active or as needed to provide CalCal. When you delete your account, we delete associated account data, meal history, saved meals, personalization, conversations, summaries, social data, reports involving your account, sessions, and usage records, subject to limited retention required by law, security, fraud prevention, or financial recordkeeping.
7. Your choices and rights
You can decline AI processing and still view your saved history and manage your data. You can withdraw AI permission, omit photos or optional profile information, and choose not to use Social. Grounded search may be used as part of AI processing for product-specific questions. You can remove meals, leave Social, sign out, or delete your account from the app. Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or obtain a copy of personal information. Contact us to exercise those rights.
8. Security and international processing
We use encrypted network connections, authenticated access, and restricted cloud services. No system can guarantee absolute security. Information may be processed outside your country, including where our cloud providers operate, with safeguards required by applicable law.
9. Children
CalCal is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us.
10. Changes
We may update this policy as CalCal evolves. We will update the effective date and provide additional notice when a material change requires it.
